ZARYA Russian Module

Zarya, russian word for Sunrise, was the first component of the International Space Station. After a flawless countdown, Zarya was launched on November 20, 1998 enclosed in the nose fairing of a Russian Proton rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on the steppes of Kazakstan.

This module provides the initial power, communications and propulsion for the Space Station. It flew alone for 2 weeks before it rendezvoused in space with Node 1 or "UNITY" carried by Space Shuttle Endeavour (STS-88).

Zarya Docking Target

After 9 years since it was launched, Zarya took a new configuration during the ISS-10A Assembly Stage, after Node 2 "Harmony" was relocated onto the US Lab "Destiny". At this stage, the solar panels were folded or retracted to make space for the S1 and P1 outer radiators to be fully deployed. Photo below shows this configuration.
