STS-100 Payload "SSRMS"

Space Shuttle Endeavour was launched on April 19, 2001 carrying the "SSRMS" (Space Station Robotic Manipulator System) to the ISS on Assembly Mission 6A. Endeavour docked to the station via PMA-2 on Destiny. In the payload bay, a special cradle, the Spacelab pallet carried the Robotic arm in its unfolded configuration. This pallet also carried the UHF antenna which was placed on Destiny via an EVA. Other payload bay element was the Multipurpose Logistic Module "Raffaello" flying for the first time.

The first EVA consisted on installing the UHF antenna on Destiny and unfolding the Robotic Arm (Canadarm2). The photos below demonstrate how the Robotic Arm was moved from the Spacelab pallet to Destiny. A second EVA took place in order to remove the second Early Communications Antenna on the starboard side of Unity in preparation for the "Quest" airlock on the next Shuttle mission. During this EVA, the DCSU was removed from the payload bay and installed on the External Stowage Platform 1 on Destiny.

The making of this payload bay papermodel was made through documentation and photos from NASA site. It is a very elaborate model due to its complexity. The pallet was made for 1:144 scale only. The Robotic Arm was built in 2 scales, 1:144 and 1:100.

The arm is fully articulated and posable in both scales. For display purposes and photography, small attachments were placed on both the Spacelab pallet and Destiny so the arm can attach to it.
